Towada City Area

Towada City is located inland in the southeast portion of Aomori Prefecture. Surrounded by mountains in the west (including Mt. Hakkoda), Towada enjoys a beautiful and peaceful natural setting, a wide sky, an abundance of fresh water from Oirase River, and the field-nurturing waters of the Inaoi River. Its population of 69,000 is divided among approximately 26,200 housenolds and concentrated in near the city's center along the Inaoi River, a manmade waterway begun by NITOBE Tsuto in 1859 (Ansei 6) and completed by succeeding generations. (NITOBE Tsuto was the grandfather of Dr. Inazo Nitobe, whose portrait has appeared on Japan's 5,000 yen bill.) A young city, Towada City traces its roots to Sanbongi Town. Through a series of mergers with Ohokunai Village, Fujisaka Village, and Shinwa Village, Sanbongi Town became Sanbongi City. After Lake Towada was made a national park in October 1996, [?? is this date correct??] Sanbongi City renamed itself Towada City. On January 1, 2005, Towadako Machi merged with Towada City, and another page in the city's history began.
