Komakaido(kanchogai Dori) (Government Offices Street)

In the tidy Towada cityscape, Komakaido (also known as Kanchogai Dori) is the citizen's pride. Towada had been known for raising fine horses, so much so that the former Imperial Japanese Army established an Office of Army Horses complement in the city. Already blessed with wide fields of crops and fine stables, the area farmers strove to produce better horses. Soon, a bustling horse market developed and became famous. The horse market was a critical element of the prosperity of the city and continued until army facilities were torn down. Komakaido was built in 1969 over the remains of the main gate road that ran to the Office of Army Horses headquarters. With a length of 1.1 km and a width of 36 meters, the street is designated as a government office area based on the national city master plan, just as in Kumamoto City or Marukame City. More than 40 government facilities and prefecture and city offices are located along the road. "Kanchogai Dori," as locals call the road, means "government office street." Red Pine and cherry trees line both sides of Komakaid. In the landscaped zpne, 168 red pine trees, 156 Yoshino cherry trees, and flowerbeds grace thoroughfare. The Ministry of Works designated Komakaido as one of the "Top 100 Hundred Roads of Japan" in 1986. Komakaido has also been selected as one of the "Top 100 Hundred Japanese Scenes" (Travel Handbook).
