Nitobe Private Bunko

In 1925 (Taisho 14), Dr. Inazo Nitobe gave part of his 10,000 book collection to relatives who lived in Sanbongi Village (now Towada City) for improvement of the culture of that area.  The Nitobe Private Bunko was built as a repository for the book collection by Kun Nitobe and Tsunetoshi Ohta (Inazo Nitobe's adopted father) near the Taisozuka, the burial place of  Dr. Nitobe's grandfather (Tsuto Nitobe).  Books on various subjects, including agriculture, law, politics, economics, industry, and literature, were kept on the first floor of the Nitobe Private Bunko, and the records of the Sanbongi Plateau Reclamation and traditional Japanese armors which had been handed down from generation to generation were stored on the second floor.
