The History of the Nitobe Memorial Museum

The Nitobe Private Bunko , now the Nitobe Memorial Museum, was established in 1925 (Taisho 14).  The Bunko was built near by Taisozuka as a repository for Dr. Inazo Nitobe's collection of books and the Nitobe Family's historic records, including those of the Sanbongi Plateau Reclamation. In 1965 (Showa 40), with the Nitobe Family's cooperation, Towada City enlarged the building to its present dimensions and renamed it the Nitobe Memorial Museum.
The museum is now operated by the Taisokenshokai, which is an organization associated with Towada City.  The organization manages the museum in honor of the city founders' achievements.  Through its collecting, preservation, educational, research, and exhibition efforts, the museum hopes that the city founders will live long in people's hearts.
