Taisozuka
The Tsuto Nitobe's grave marker and its surrounding grounds are
referred to as the Taisozuka. Prior to his death in 1871 (Meiji 4), Tsuto purchased
some Sesshu granite in Osaka, his favorite type, and had it engraved. The engraving
on the stone shows Tsuto's handwriting. He decided to place his grave on a rise
overlooking the Sanbongi Field, and placed the engraved stone there, and then planted a
variety of trees, including arborvitae, pine trees, cedars, and chestnut trees.
