On nationao highway Route 103, beginning at Lake Towada (the source of the Oirase River) and Onsenkyo Yakiyama, you will find seven ponds that were made by the explosion of Akakuradake, a volcano in the Hakkoda Range. The walking trail (2.8km ; about an hour's walk) is set out near Tsuta Hot Spring Japanease-style hotel. The trail linds six ponds - Tsutanuma, Kagaminuma, Tsukinuma, Hyotannuma, Suganuma, Chounuma. Cool even in summer, the walk proceeds throught Tsuta no Mori (Tsuta Forest), a virgin beech forest ful of wild birds, making the stroll pleasant to the ears as well as the eye.
